BOLT GRINDER
Grinder Bolts are heavily insulated Grinders capable of carrying immense electrical charges across great distances. Originally designed as mobile energy sources to support of Toilers operating in unmanned or dangerous locations, the Bolter models have only minor offensive facilities and are not generally regarded as a threat to seasoned explorers. However, while they may lack the post production instructions to operate unassisted, they will recognize more sophisticated Toilers and defer to new directives when primary goals are, for whatever reason, in disaccord.
THE BROOD
The
darkest hour of the Residuum was known as the Wailing when across the Plate
hundreds of gaping sinkholes opened releasing an outpouring invasion of these
horrid creatures. The initial swarm was destroyed, but completely eradicating
the brood from the surface took years. Little information exists of the Brood
social structure but it is clear that these creatures exist to destroy all
living things in their need to feed. One theory is that the Brood are missing
some specific aether that makes them very hungry and in constant pain.
CHEMROACH
This startling variant of the common clockroach carries small vats of acid upon its back shell that link into the large construct’s inner workings. Once engaged in combat, the roach launches a horribly effective chemical acid attack at range. No one has yet been able to closely examine the Chemroach’s internal workings effectively since it explodes upon deactivation. Even though they are commonly found among clockroach swarms, there is no evidence showing whether these variants are leaders or just another cog in the clockwork mystery.
BLADEROACH
Although the people of the Mechanism have centuries of experience fighting the persistent, voracious clockroach, surprisingly little is known about their life cycle. Fully exterminated infestations sometimes rebound in a matter of days, suggesting that true nests - perhaps even hives - lay somewhere beneath. The recent emergence of a new and fearsome clockroach model seems to support this idea. Commonly taking up a defensive posture to protect its smaller kin, the 'bladeroach' dispatches adversaries with razor-sharp claws.
CHOKE GRINDER
This industrial Grinder was one of the first to show signs of instructional decay, though few have narrowed down precisely why this is the case. Essentially walking factories, these three-armed machines can be instructed to build nearly anything. Unfortunately, this makes them quite the adversary, shifting seamlessly from one form of attack to another.
CLOUD RAY
Cloud Rays remain one of the more elusive creatures in the skies, as they tend to hide in phlogisticated (floating) wreckage. They are aerodynamic, sleek and can accelerate to great speeds making them difficult to catch or defend against. Their poisonous, barbed tails are used to wound prey, which the Ray then follows up by using its wings to grapple victims, holding them firm while it feeds. In airship graveyards they have been known to fly in group formations of up to thirty Rays at once, but typically exist in groups of three to five.
CEPHAMAW
During earlier years of exploration, woodcuts depicting an enormous cephamaw devouring primitive airships were popular. Many insisted that such creatures were a myth until more sophisticated airship expeditions proved otherwise. To date, there have been no documented cases of these creatures growing to sizes depicted in the woodcuts, but the fact remains that the cephamaw are easily provoked and possess great strength. Luckily, they only tend to lash out in defense when approached.
CHITTLES
Most of what we know about the life cycle of the common Heartland Chittle comes from interviews with retired miners. Even seasoned veterans have been known to seek a new career after a single encounter. It's not difficult to see why; even the larval Chittle can administer a debilitating poison, but each form after that is deadlier than the last.
CHITTLE UMBRAHUSK
The formidable and final form of the species is the Husk. Neither male nor female, this large brute’s pincers grow to a tremendous size and deliver a frightening, crushing blow. The only advantage one might find against the Husk is its aversion to strong light, hence the term Umbra being adhered to the name. Most disturbing is the reported reproductive cycle of the chittle. Once grown beyond capacity, the Husk proceeds to discard its bulk by ‘vomiting’ up acid covered chittle eggs that immediately hatch with ravenous larvae.
CHITTLE PINCER
Once it has consumed enough, the ever evolving form of the larvae morphs into the larger chittle form categorized as a Pincer. Sporting a hideous maw, but now with rows of horrid teeth along the outer rim, this chittle form has extended out dangerous scorpion-like pincers it uses to grasp prey firmly while feeding. The maw is now able to deliver a devastating attack of digestive acids at range.
CHITTLE LARVA
Capable of defending itself seconds after hatching, a Chittle Larva can paralyze and devour prey twice its size with frightening speed. After consuming its prey, it begins to grow in size almost immediately. Finding a means of disrupting the Chittle Larva's incredible metabolism would be a boon to miners, archaeologists, and adventurers alike, though such a discovery has yet to be made.

CHEMSPIDER(BLUE)
The more aggressive of the arachnoid constructs, the blue pedipalps upon the forelegs of this creature actually drain the Steam from living creatures. Driven by a seemingly insatiable hunger, they will follow a food source until it can be cornered and harvested. Despite this a tentative symbiotic partnership seems to exist between the marooned Yusana Corsairs and these vicious hunters.
CLOCKROACH
The origin of the mechanical clockroach, easily the most common pest on the Mechanism, is shrouded in mystery. Considering the damage that these steel-chewing, oil-guzzling, self-replicating creatures have caused since they emerged in the early New Epoch, it's hardly a surprise that no one has taken credit for creating them. Once a nest is established, clockroaches are nearly impossible to exterminate.

CHEMSPIDER(GREEN)
Unlike their more aggressive cousins, Green Chemspiders are strangely trainable creatures, although the relationships they develop with their handlers sometimes take on a sinister edge. The spider's pedipalps contain a lightly paralytic venom, repeated doses of which can result in a state of sluggish euphoria. Trained Green Chemspiders offer their venom freely, while feral specimens sometimes develop an odd symbiosis with creatures much larger than themselves, gaining a hunting partner of sorts until other prey becomes scarce.
DRYAD
At the heart of any large trow infestation you will find the dryad. Their eerie but exotic appearance is a literally a trap, as it can easily be perceived as harmless to anyone not experienced with trow ruthlessness. Able to heal the already sturdy saplings at its command, the dryad can summon even more to replenish any that have fallen in battle. Even if seemingly destroyed, the dryad form can at times quickly reform to its full power.
ELDER
Towering above the rest of the trow, the elder form is the personification of rage. Not only does its mass lend force to the blows from its deadly clawed fists but the earth itself literally shakes as it closes in to attack. The resulting shockwaves knock aside all in its path, leaving fallen adversaries venerable to its mighty strikes. Worse still, the elder can release thorn like roots into the ground that patiently burrow under an enemy to strike.
FAERIE
This peculiar manifestation of the trow has a set of wings that do not allow it to fly but are used instead to whip forward, launching an effective ranged strike at targets. This tactic is very effective in supporting their brethren during swarming attacks. The faerie’s presence also seems to bolster the defensive abilities of those near to them.
FROST GUARD
Constructed creatures created by arcane secrets of elemental science are formidable, and none more so than the Frost Guard. Constructed by the very moisture around its summoner, the golem’s only existence is during its servitude to its master. They are mindless, with no will of their own and only follow their given prime direction. Although rare, these constructs have been encountered guarding ancient archives.
GREASE GRINDER
It was out of desperation that the Grinder Greaser came into existence. Built from the spare parts of rejected or broken Grinders, it was a creation never meant to be. But who or what constructed the Greaser is a topic of ongoing debate. The sophistication in building a Grinder aside, they seem to possess little in the ways of programming. It has been suggested that the Greaser is the result of other free-thinking Grinders attempting to better understand themselves.
GLITTERBUG
Glitterbugs are large insects with highly sensitive gas conversion organs evolved specifically to deal with pressure variations present at different altitudes. In addition to aiding in their flight, the organ can convert phlogiston into light phlasmatic beams that the creatures use to hunt and disable their prey. Early navigitects of the high altitudes saw the Glitterbug as a sign of good fortune, knowing that they wouldn’t stray too far from their nests.

City of Steam is a browser-based, free-to-play, online RPG. The game is set in an industrial fantasy world with steampunk elements. This is the World Machine, a vast and ancient system of interlocking gears powered by unfathomable energies. Long ago, a race of ingenious conquerors called the Paragons sought to control those energies, but destroyed themselves in the attempt. They left behind a shattered world and a complex legacy.
Even now, millennia after the Era of Myth, that legacy continues to affect the course of history on the World Machine. To the races that already inhabited the mechanism – humans, goblins, orcs, and hobbes – they added the charismatic riven, insular draug, and half-mechanical dwarves. Life on the Mechanism has been revolutionized by the study of the Praragons’ lost technologies. Airships soar overhead, robotic steamtoilers patrol the streets, and great factories produce weapons wielded by heroes and villains alike.
Four great human nations have emerged since the fall of the Paragons: The confederated city-state of the Heartlands, the allied kingdoms of Ostenia, the patriarchal Republic of Avenoss, and the harsh Empire of Stoigmar. At the site of the Paragons’ fall lies the City-State of Nexus, a once-great industrial metropolis where players will arrive as refugees, ready to carve out a new life.
Different character choices will define individual storylines and quests. Players will arrive at The Refuge in the decaying city of Nexus. As you explore the world you’ll discover more about your own family history, find a place in your new home and contribute to rebuilding (or further destroying) the city of Nexus. City of Steam has a social dynamic so players can interact with each other, form teams, battle other players or adventure alone.
A lot of people have noticed how frustrating it is to wander for such a long time to get to any quests in many other MMORPGs. We want to provide an alternative so that players can wander around in City of Steam, make acquaintances, and then head into the dungeons for some fun. However, if you don’t want to know anybody, you can also walk right on by and play it like an RPG. Will there be dungeons that will be better suited for multi-player? Absolutely, but we like to think of it as an online RPG with MMO characteristics.

We don’t push the game completely as a “Steampunk” game. We try to use the term ‘industrial age fantasy’ since it isn’t as full blown steampunk as many would like. However, the game takes place in a unique environment that many steampunk gamers will adore.

Yes, it’s the “Full Screen” button on the top-right of the screen.
You can drop useless items, add them to your collection, or use the Transmuter to make them useful. You can also trade with other people, salvage the materials or sell items in the marketplace.
You can upgrade or purchase new equipment from shopkeepers or other game players. You can also modify and craft unique equipment using mods and salvaged materials.
Monsters can be found and battled in dungeons and for quests. Some monsters in City of Steam have special skills. More details are listed on the Beastiary page which will be updated as further creatures are created.
Basically we were aiming for a turn-based combat system in the past but it turned out to be boring and annoying so we’ve been converting it to a real time action RPG style. The cast timers are there because this is a web-browser game and complications with client/server communication require this slower paced format. We do think that the cool-down timer just guarantees a perfect balance between real-time and strategy.
No, but there are level recommendations when entering specific dungeons. If you choose to ignore our warnings, be prepared.
There is a PVP system but it is optional. You may challenge anyone but they have the choice to reject or accept the duel. Every suburb will have its own special PVP arena. We will probably put different conditions or different events in these arenas, to keep players on edge and make different challenges in each.
